World Cup 2026 Round of 32: Every Match, Every Prediction

The Round of 32: A New World Cup Format Moment

The 2026 World Cup introduced the Round of 32 for the first time in the tournament's history. After 72 group stage matches, 32 teams remain. They play single-elimination ties from July 3-7. Sixteen advance. Sixteen go home.

No more safety nets. No more comfortable third-place consolation paths. One game, winner moves on.

Why the Round of 32 Changes Everything

In every previous World Cup, the knockout round started at 16 teams. Groups fed directly into a Round of 16. The 2026 format adds an extra round that means teams ranked third in their group -- even the best third-placed teams -- have to win another match before they're guaranteed a place in the Round of 16.

This has a direct effect on the bracket: the Round of 32 features several ties between teams that would previously never have met until much later in the tournament. The format compresses the early shock exits into one high-stakes window.

The Ties to Watch

Argentina vs. Japan Messi's defending champions versus the tournament's surprise group stage team. Japan's aggressive pressing and tactical discipline caused problems for every opponent in the group stage. Argentina has the quality to handle it, but Japan has shown they can upset anyone when the press works.

France vs. Morocco This is a genuine blockbuster. Morocco made the 2022 semifinal and nearly beat France in that match before losing 2-0. Kylian Mbappé is faster and more experienced than he was in Qatar. But Morocco's defensive structure -- the best in the group stage -- will make this uncomfortable. France are favourites. Morocco are dangerous.

England vs. Brazil The tie the neutral wanted. England's Kane-Bellingham combination against Brazil's electric front four. England have looked organized and clinical. Brazil have looked unstoppable in short bursts. This could be the match of the round.

Spain vs. USA The host nation against the reigning European champions. The USA's home crowd will be the loudest of the entire tournament. Spain's possession game is designed to neutralize atmosphere. Expect Spain to control the ball and the USA to make it as uncomfortable as possible for 90 minutes.

Germany vs. Portugal A European heavyweight tie. Germany's rebuild under their new manager has shown progress. Portugal without Ronaldo is a different team -- more collective, potentially more functional. The Müller-less Germany vs. the Ronaldo-less Portugal is a match between two teams still figuring out their post-golden-generation identity.

Predictions

The honest answer is that 16-team knockout rounds are unpredictable by design. Any of the eight group runners-up or third-placed teams can beat a group winner on a given day. That's the format's appeal.

The teams most likely to reach the Round of 16: Argentina, France, England, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, Morocco, and Japan. But at least two of those eight will go home in the Round of 32 -- that's the nature of single-elimination football.
